The transience of flowers and an attempt to capture their essence is central to the paintings.
Travel and places visited such as the temples of Hong Kong, the tiled patios, balconies of Andalucia and the simplicity of Greek houses influence colour, composition and the selection of objects.
Special places in Britain play an important part too including the seasonal changes in the garden, the hedgerow as well as journeys to discover new places.
Jane Askey is a painter exploring the still life to reflect her travels and her interest in decorative objects and flowers. The resonance of objects and their associations with time and place are central to the paintings; a moment, a specific season or time of day, an object evoking a memory of someone or somewhere, an unspoken narrative are layered into Jane’s paintings.

“I begin a painting and see where my selection of flowers, fruit and objects take me. The space they occupy and their relationship to each other informs the next step.
Flowers from the garden, scraps of fabrics, found papers and decorative ceramics are combined to create a personal mix of colour and pattern to capture the essence of places I have visited”.
